Our collective team throws its weight behind a variety of causes close to our hearts, through sponsorship, donations, time and awareness. One Agency Mildura is proud to sponsor The Mildura Base Public Hospital Foundation and The Lucas Foundation, two charities that are close to the heart of our business. We strongly value the contribution of local sporting clubs and organisations, whose efforts contribute to the active and healthy lifestyle we all enjoy.
Charity in Mildura is at the forefront of what we do, and has been since long before One Agency Mildura began, but now continues to be something that is at the heart of what we do as a Real Estate Company and as a team.
The Lucas Foundation Beginnings
In 2013, 3 month old local boy, Lucas Whitelegg suddenly fell ill and was rushed to hospital, firstly to Mildura then very quickly flown to Melbourne in a dire situation. Lucas was later diagnosed as the nation’s youngest ever baby to contract Botulism. Spending nine months in a paralytic state in intensive care, and a further six weeks on the ward of the Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Lucas’ young parents initially found themselves in desperate need of support for their relocation 600km’s from home.
During this testing time, Director of One Agency Mildura, Mark Thornton, close friends of Lucas’ parents, began a campaign that resulted in the biggest fundraisers ever seen in Mildura, ‘The Helping Little Lucas Fundraiser’.
Whilst Lucas was in hospital in Melbourne, the local community rallied, the fundraiser a huge success in raising funds to support Lucas’ recovery.
And in the Whitelegg’s own words, it was the generosity of their local community that enabled them to persevere through their darkest hours.
With little or no financial support available for the many regional families with a sick child, The Lucas Foundation was founded and created by Mark and a core group of 5 locals, including Lucas’ parents to provide a helping hand, and to assist in alleviating burden on families that they find themselves in these most trying of times.
The Lucas Foundation aimed to care for our local families whilst they strive to meet the needs of their sick children.
Over the course of time, $350,000 has been handed to many, many local Mildura families dealing with the struggles and costs associated with dealing with a sick child, whilst displaced so far from home.
In 2022, The Lucas Foundation joined forces with another local Charity Organisation, The Mildura Base Public Hospital Foundation, adding $250,000 to the newly established foundation. Designed to raise funds for cancer research, help assist rural students realise their dream of studying a healthcare related degree by providing scholarship’s and also to continue to support families with a sick child via The Lucas Foundation.
This charity organisation is a tremendous way to support many facets of people needing support or care both financially and emotionally, with the forefront to greater healthcare in our district.
Mark is proud to be the foundations’ Chief Auctioneer, and has recently been appointed to the Foundation Board.
Supporting the local community
The One Agency Mildura team are incredibly supportive and very much involved in all events held locally, donating their time and efforts to support this charity that offers fantastic support to the local community, having contributed over $25,000 of our own funds in the past 12 months alone.
We are thrilled to partner, support and be involved with these tremendous charities and are proud of our achievements in supporting our own community.
